A Tour Through the Ramsheads:

Saturday August 9, 2003.

The storm continued to rage through the morning and on into the early afternoon.

The Ramshead Plateau between North Ramshead (2177m) and Central Ramhead Mtn (2193m).

I had lunch behind a rock pile on the north side of Central Ramshead. There are no photos because there was nothing that could be seen.

After lunch the weather began to clear slowly.

This view is from the south slope of Central Ramshead looking down Leatherbarrel Creek.

Looking north to the Abbot Range.

Everywhere you look is just fabulous.

Ice formations after the storm.

A closeup of an unnamed gully down to Leatherbarrel.

Looking down to South Ramshead (2054m).

The weather continues to clear - S Ramshead.

At treeline, the ice and sky are intense.

What a way to spend a day!

This route roughly follows a walk shown in the Geehi Bushwalking Club book of Snowy Mountain walks. I started at Cascade Ck carpark did the south loop shown on Plate 6, returning to Deadhorse carpark and then a very short walk down the Alpine Way to the Cascadecarpark. The approximate total height gain is 2,800ft; typical round trip time is 4 hours 30 minutes. Transport courtesy of MSR Denali Classic snowshoes with 8" tails.
