Mid-winter views of Mt Tate - a perfect day:

July 19, 2003

View across Guthega Dam up the Guthega River valley to Consett Stephen Pass at the head of the valley.

Mt Tate is a pile of rocks just right of centre in this image. The bushfires did NOT destroy the wooden "bridge" across Guthega River

(-36°22.310', 148°22.055'). The route turns due west at the bridge then turns due north once the summit ridge is reached

at (-36°22.308', 148°21.445').

Summit ridge is traditionally called the east ridge - this is crazy since it is clearly due south of the summit!

(Australians are not too concerned about technical details!)

The last few metres to the summit. Hard ice meant crampons would have proved more useful than my snowshoes.

Too bad the crampons are in a cupboard back home in Canberra!

A perfect day and a perfect view. Mt Bogong Victoria in background.

Mt Tate, 6784ft, 2068m, (-36°21.208', 148°, 21.202').

Boiler plate ice!

Late afternoon sastrugi.

Round trip time, 4hrs 39mins; cumulative height gain from Guthega car park, 2,060ft.
